Sheila Shefo Mbiru is a Principal Research Scientist at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Nairobi, Kenya. Her area of specialization is Wood and Non-Wood Forest Products and she has undertaken research, generated and disseminated technologies for efficient processing, innovation, value adding and utilization of wood and non-wood forest products in Kenya and in the region In addition to her research work, Sheila has since 2010 speared-headed the institutionalisation of Knowledge Management in KEFRI. This has allowed her to combine her science background and knowledge management experience to contribute effectively to capturing and disseminating data, information and knowledge from research. This will increase the impact and uptake of research results and technologies developed, which will contribute to the growing global knowledge economy. Under Sheila's able leadership, the KEFRI Knowledge Management Steering Committee has achieved commendable success including; Training, Undertaking a Knowledge Audit, Developing a Knowledge Management Strategy and using the Balanced Score Card tool entrenched Knowledge Management in KEFRIs 5th Strategic Plan 2013 - 2018. Knowledge Management will now be cascaded to all levels of the organization and implemented by both technical and non-technical departments. In addition, KEFRI will for the first time have a Knowledge Management Office. She has authored and co – authored over 30 knowledge products produced by KEFRI including brochures, posters, fact sheets, newsletters, technical reports, books and policy briefs. Additionally Sheila has represented KEFRI as a presenter, participant, organizer and panelist in over 50 meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences and congresses at national, regional and international level.
