Data governance solves multiple KM challenges

Talend provides several components in its platform, including data integration, application integration, data integrity, and governance. In addition, Talend has introduced the Talend Trust Score metric to the platform, which calculates the reliability of datasets. This tool provides immediate feedback on critical aspects of the data, including completeness, uniqueness, and validity. The results are presented on a dashboard.

“Data governance is not optional at this point,” noted Pelosi. “Organizations need to be in compliance to be competitive. And data governance without automation cannot exist, given today’s volume and complexity of information.” Well-governed information produces better insights, more rapid follow-up with new opportunities, and higher customer satisfaction levels.

mplementing data governance policies is a multi-step process. “Organiza- tions can work from their knowledgebase to find and describe data for which pol- icies need to be developed,” Pelosi noted, “but then those policies need to be applied.” Once policies are applied, automated feedback allows data quality to be monitored and lineage tracked so that any errors can be corrected. “Tracking lineage can be more complex than it seems,” Pelosi pointed out, “given that, in a large company, data may be moved and processed through many integration tools from different vendors or hand- coded scripts, in many cases using manual procedures.”

What holds companies back from successfully implementing a data governance system is not cost or lack of awareness of the tools, but lack of maturity in the data governance journey, according to Pelosi. “Putting in an effective data governance initiative is not only about software,” he commented. “The initiative can fail because of lack of a solid, automated data integration layer or lack of data quality focus, but also because of lack of executive sponsorship, corporate governance, and stewardship processes. Our modular system allows companies to start up from where they are and advance as their maturity grows.”

Organizations are recognizing that effective data governance is ultimately more of a benefit than a burden. It increases efficiency by delivering trusted data, improves business processes, decreases data downtime, and reduces compliance risk. It also promotes data literacy throughout the enterprise. By taking steps to optimize their data governance programs, organizations can address multiple challenges within a single framework.
