Semantic-enhanced AI is based on the fusion of semantic technologies and machine learning, according to Andreas Blumauer, CEO of the Semantic Web Company (SWC), where he is responsible for business development and strategic product management of the PoolParty Semantic Suite.
In his keynote presentation at KMWorld 2018, Blumauer discussed the six core aspects of semantic-enhanced AI and why semantics should be a fundamental element of any AI strategy. Machine learning can help to extend knowledge graphs, and in return, knowledge graphs can help to improve ML algorithms, he pointed out. This integrated approach ultimately leads to systems that work as self-optimizing machines after an initial set-up phase, while being transparent to the underlying knowledge models.
In his presentation, Blumauer looked at the current status of graph technology, and how it is related to artificial intelligence.
Presenting a list of companies that have already embraced knowledge graphs, he noted that it is clear how practical knowledge graphs are and how frequently they are used. Nine out of 10 of the “quite huge” companies already use knowledge graphs for different purposes, but in many cases, it's about knowledge management, it's about data integration.
Another clear indicator that knowledge graphs finally have arrived is that Gartner has introduced knowledge graphs in two of its hype cycles. One was the hype cycle for AI, and the other one, “which is a bit broader,” is the hype cycle for emerging technologies, said Blumauer.
“In both of those hype cycles, knowledge graphs are now well positioned, and we will see how far we can get with that,” he observed.
It is important to understand that are two types of graph databases, added Blumauer. One type is property graphs, and the other one is the RDF graph model. The RDF graph model is the standards-based graph database technology, and the property graphs technology is used, for instance, for social network analysis.
