Enterprise governance solution from Proofpoint

Respected security-as-a-service provider Proofpoint has released a new enterprise information governance solution that allows organizations to easily track, classify, apply policies and monitor unstructured information across the organization.

Proofpoint Enterprise Governance is based on technology obtained through its acquisition of NextPage, a provider of in-place information governance solutions to global enterprise customers. The company says Proofpoint Enterprise Governance uses NextPage’s cloud-based Digital Thread technology to fingerprint documents and track their versions and destinations across disparate systems.

Proofpoint Enterprise Governance is designed to help enterprises control the legal and financial risks and e-discovery costs related to unstructured information by defining and enforcing enterprise information governance policies. Proofpoint Enterprise Governance also is said to improve document policy compliance and to reduce retention costs by identifying and disposing of documents no longer needed.

Proofpoint claims Enterprise Governance adds to its current data protection suite through the following capabilities:

  • the ability to monitor and control the flow of information across all major data stores and communication channels—including enterprise e-mail systems, file sharing systems, collaboration solutions (such as SharePoint, Documentum and Lotus Domino), cloud-based file sharing services (such as Dropbox), as well as both laptops and desktops;
  • proactive document governance capabilities for compliance with retention policies and for e-discovery, including legal holds, for all types of documents and messages;
  • improved data protection for intellectual property; and
  • consistent, policy-based protection for data at rest, enabling document life cycle data protection.
