EMC Unleashes New Cloud-Native Content Management Applications

At EMC World 2016, the EMC Enterprise Content Division (ECD) unveiled EMC LEAP, a suite of purpose-built, cloud-native content apps.

In addition, in a separate announcement at EMC World, it was revealed that, following EMC’s planned merger with Dell, the combined company will be named Dell Technologies, with “Dell EMC” used for the company’s enterprise business, including products and solutions sold directly and through the channel to business and institutional customers.

The new EMC LEAP family will consist of both EMC and third-party content apps, a modular platform, and a marketplace. “Our vision for the marketplace is that it will ultimately be the premier destination for content-centric apps,” said Chris McLaughlin, chief marketing officer of EMC’s ECD.

“It’s a next-generation, entirely new, cloud-native SaaS platform for enterprise content management,” said McLaughlin. “We think this is really reinventing enterprise content management in the cloud.”

EMC LEAP apps are interoperable with existing content repositories and are engineered to work with the EMC Documentum family of content management products. “What we want to do with LEAP is bring a new set of cloud native apps that would bring new capabilities that would complement the capabilities that our customers already have with Documentum,” McLaughlin said.

These five apps will focus on a variety of content management use cases, a new partner and customer success program, and a new partnership with DocuSign.

While LEAP Courier offers a new way to power business processes that depend on structured document exchange across organizational boundaries, LEAP Snap delivers enterprise-grade document capture to business users.

According to EMC, LEAP Snap’s Advanced Recognition automatically captures, categorizes, and organizes documents and related document information in real-time, turning unstructured content into actionable digital business information.

Additional components are LEAP Concert, which enables the creation of a wide variety of documents in a collaborative but controlled environment and LEAP Express enables users with the ability to easily browse, access, search and approve all content, no matter where it lives.

“We feel that Express is a perfect complement to those Documentum capabilities to really enable those mobile users to engage in the process, quickly access the work they need, complete it, and move that process along,” McLaughlin said. “Concert is one I’m really excited about. We look at it as collaborative authoring with control.”

Lastly, LEAP Focus seeks to improve the document consumption experience on mobile devices. Allowing for fast and detailed reading and reviewing of business documents like sales contracts and agreements.

Following the Dell-EMC merger, which is being touted as the largest tech deal ever, Dell Technologies will include the combined technologies, companies, and brands of Dell, EMC, VMware, Pivotal, SecureWorks, RSA and Virtustream. Valued at approximately $67 billion, the deal is expected to close in the second or third quarter of Dell’s fiscal year which ends February 3, 2017 (within the months of May to October 2016), the companies announced back in October 2015.
