Industry Veterans Share Their Tips and Tricks for KM
Longtime KM vets, Kim Glover, Director, Knowledge Management and Social Learning, TechnipFMC and Steering Committees: Knowledge Leaders Council, APQC KM Conference, and Scott Leeb, Engagement Director, Iknow, LLC, share their knowledge of KM strategies, practices, failures, and more during their session, “Ask the Experts” at KMWorld 2018.
The 22nd KMWorld conference is co-located with Taxonomy Boot Camp 2018, Enterprise Search & Discovery, Text Analytics Forum ’18, and Office 365 Symposium.
Glover and Leeb discussed lessons learned from the trenches, how to sell KM, learning from failure and how to effectively communicate KM.
Questions ranged from challenges that currently face Knowledge Managers to how do KM workers stay in existence to how to navigate different platforms within a business to share knowledge.
KM World 2019 will be held November 5-7, 2019 at the JW Marriott in Washington, DC, with pre-conference workshops on November 4.
“It’s really an existential challenge as to whether KM will exist in 5, 10, 15 years etc,” Glover said.
It’s imperative to show HR and have them experience what KM can do for a business that can reinforce its importance, Glover said.
With the gig economy and constant turnover, it’s also increasingly paramount to retain intelligent workers, convert tasks for explicit knowledge, and maintain an audit trail so knowledge isn’t lost, Leeb said.
As questions filtered in from the audience one that struck out to Glover and Leeb was how to streamline information that has been captured from different platforms.
Glover said that it can be as easy as deciding what to use and when to communicate with certain tools. However, it’s not always that transparent as to what new KM tools will be a hit with teams.
Giving teams’ guidance and promoting strong governance can streamline communication and the transfer of information between departments, Glover said.
