Secure social networking helps world leaders collaborate

At the recent G-20 Summit, policy makers could collaborate over secure social networking software before, after and during the event in Toronto. In a recent press release, Open Text reported that it had created the social networking application to enhance information sharing about the position of government leaders on world financial matters.

Providing the secure, hosted social networking platform to G-8 and G-20 participants resulted from a collaboration among Open Text, the Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN) and the Canadian Dept. of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). In addition to secure Web access from anywhere in real time, delegates could also access the application from their BlackBerrys, iPhones and iPads. The application supports multiple languages.

Tony Clement, Canada’s industry minister, says, “This social networking platform is a great example of private business stepping up and ensuring Canada’s leadership in the digital economy. The application will help bridge geographic and cultural gaps and get full value from global events of this kind.”

Open Text also reports that its Social Workplace software, based on its ECM Suite, was also used to provide a social networking platform for summit participants including news outlets and businesses. Participants could connect with expert sources, including librarians and other content matter experts, on call to provide prompt answers to questions. That site can be found here .
