Staying ahead of a growing SharePoint environment

The city of Charlotte, N.C has chosen a solution from Axceler to expand its SharePoint environment. The city selected Axceler’s ControlPoint to better manage the SharePoint environment, and will also deploy Axceler’s Davinci Migrator to manage an upcoming SharePoint 2010 upgrade.

Kyle Wright, SharePoint infrastructure support manager for Charlotte, says, “Tasks that used to require so much time to handle manually now can be accomplished in a fraction of the time with ControlPoint. The time savings is huge. ControlPoint is the only reason we’ve been able to stay ahead of our growing environment without increasing headcount.”

According to a press release from Axceler, Charlotte chose the solution because of its ease of use and ability to help manage a more formal SharePoint environment. The city’s SharePoint environment consists of seven SharePoint farms running on two dozen servers to meet the needs of 6,500 employees in 14 key business units. The applications supported range from capabilities like records management and team collaboration sites, to functions such as posting benefits information and to less formal applications, like an online employee swap shop.

Axceler reports that ControlPoint helps Wright better address burdensome but essential administrative tasks—such as replacing outmoded web parts--that were difficult to tackle with native SharePoint administrative tools.

Wright says, “ControlPoint’s ability to handle so many administrative tasks was a key factor in our decision, and this turned out to be even more important than we originally anticipated.”
